A message from Lance Hurley:
I was watching America Ninja Warrior last night and saw something that caught my attention. These athletes are in incredible shape as they attempt to conquer the obstacle course. (If you haven't seen this show, competitors go through a variety of unbelievable obstacles as they try to overcome and finish the course.) On this particular night, only one man was able to complete the course. Two other men did reach the final obstacle, only to 'run out of gas' and having to drop out. Both of them were interviewed after coming up short and were asked what changes were needed to bring success next time. The answers were identical:
"I need to train more and I need to train harder."
If I want to finish well as a follower of Jesus, I need to stay in training. It is very easy to get lax in training, to assume that the strength I have always had will always be present. The reality I have learned: Strength is not something that can be stored up, it is something that needs to be continually built up. When a follower takes time to build spiritual strength, we will be ready for whatever comes our way in life and will be able to finish strong.
We are in the middle of a message series designed to highlight different practices that will enable followers of Jesus to build spiritual strength. I am looking forward to being with you on August 30 as we dive into one of the key practices of strength training: Prayer. The Bible is filled with stories of people who practiced prayer. I know that this practice is a great connection point between us and God. Power flows through connection.
Practice spending time with God as you read your Bible this week (thank you Thomas for covering this key practice) and then enjoy attending church with Journey in Elmhurst on Sunday. I will see you back at the Anchor on August 30th.
